At OCL Vision, we understand the impact corneal disease can have on your vision and quality of life.

Phototherapeutic Keratectomy (PTK) is a highly effective laser procedure designed to treat a range of corneal conditions, restoring clarity and comfort to your eyes. Our experienced corneal specialists utilise state-of-the-art technology to deliver precise and personalised PTK treatments.

What is PTK?

Phototherapeutic Keratectomy (PTK) is a type of excimer laser surgery that removes superficial irregularities and opacities from the cornea.

Unlike LASIK or LASEK, which primarily focus on correcting refractive errors, PTK specifically targets and treats corneal disease and damage.

The laser gently removes microscopic layers of corneal tissue, smoothing the surface and improving the passage of light through the eye. This can significantly improve vision, reduce pain, and enhance overall eye comfort. The procedure is performed on an outpatient basis and typically takes only a few minutes per eye.

Phototherapeutic Keratectomy offers several significant benefits for individuals suffering from specific corneal conditions:

  • Improved Vision: By smoothing corneal irregularities, PTK can dramatically improve visual acuity.
  • Reduced Pain and Discomfort: PTK can alleviate pain and discomfort associated with corneal erosions and other surface irregularities.
  • Treatment of Corneal Diseases: PTK is effective in treating conditions such as recurrent corneal erosion syndrome, corneal dystrophies, and corneal scarring. It can also be used effectively in conjunction with corneal collagen crosslinking for the treatment of keratoconus
  • Minimally Invasive: As a laser procedure, PTK is minimally invasive, resulting in a quicker recovery compared to traditional surgical methods.

Who is Phototherapeutic Keratectomy Recommended For?

PTK is typically recommended for individuals with the following corneal conditions:

  • Recurrent Corneal Erosion Syndrome: A condition where the outer layer of the cornea (epithelium) repeatedly breaks down, causing pain and blurred vision.
  • Corneal Dystrophies: Genetic conditions that cause abnormal deposits to accumulate in the cornea.
  • Corneal Scars: Scars on the cornea caused by injury or infection.
  • Superficial Corneal Opacities: Clouding or haziness on the surface of the cornea.
  • Anterior Basement Membrane Dystrophy (ABMD): A condition causing blurry vision due to an irregular corneal surface.
  • Keratoconus: Here the PTK is used to remove the epithelium and create a small improvement in corneal shape before crosslinking is applied.

A comprehensive eye examination is crucial to determine if Phototherapeutic Keratectomy is the right treatment option for your specific condition.

Our specialists at OCL Vision will carefully assess your cornea and discuss your individual needs and expectations.

Patient Journey

What to Expect During Phototherapeutic Keratectomy (PTK)

Prior to the procedure, your eyes will be thoroughly examined, and measurements will be taken to customise the laser treatment. On the day of the procedure, anaesthetic eye drops will be administered to numb the eye, ensuring a comfortable and painless experience. The excimer laser will then be used to precisely remove the affected corneal tissue. A bandage contact lens will be placed on the eye to protect it during the initial healing period. Post-operative care includes antibiotic and anti-inflammatory eye drops to prevent infection and promote healing.

Phototherapeutic Keratectomy FAQ's

View knowledge base

Is PTK painful?

No, the procedure is not painful. Anaesthetic eye drops are used to numb the eye completely and you will be offered a mild sedation to calm any nerves. You may experience some mild discomfort or a gritty sensation after the procedure, which can be managed with pain relief medication.

How long does PTK take?

The actual laser treatment typically takes only a few minutes per eye. However, you should expect to be at the clinic for 90 minutes total to allow for preparation and post-operative instructions.

What is the recovery time after PTK?

The initial recovery period is usually a few days to a week. Vision improvement is gradual and may continue for several weeks or months.

Will I need glasses after PTK?

In some cases, PTK can improve vision to the point where glasses are no longer needed. However, depending on your individual condition, you may still require glasses or contact lenses for optimal vision and your prescription may change (normally improve) following PTK.

Is PTK suitable for everyone with corneal problems?

PTK is not suitable for all corneal conditions. A thorough eye examination is necessary to determine if PTK is the right treatment option for you.

How successful is PTK?

PTK has a high success rate in treating specific corneal conditions. However, the outcome can vary depending on the severity and nature of the condition.

What are the alternatives to PTK?

Alternatives to PTK may include corneal transplant, superficial keratectomy, or other corneal procedures. The best option for you will depend on your individual condition.

How long will the effects of PTK last?

The effects of PTK are generally long-lasting. However, in some cases, the treated condition may recur over time, requiring further treatment.

Are scans included in the corneal consultation price?

Scans are not included in the initial consultation fee. The initial consultation is £350, and each scan costs £50. Up to 3 scans may be required, as confirmed by the consultant, bringing the total price to £350 + scans.
