DMEK Keratoplasty

DMEK: Advanced Corneal Transplant Surgery for Endothelial Disorders

DMEK (Descemet Membrane Endothelial Keratoplasty) is a cutting-edge corneal transplant procedure that replaces only the innermost layer of the cornea, offering faster visual recovery and lower rejection rates compared to traditional transplant methods.

At OCL Vision, we provide cutting-edge corneal transplantation techniques, including Descemet Membrane Endothelial Keratoplasty (DMEK).

This advanced procedure focuses on replacing only the damaged Descemet membrane and endothelial cells while preserving the majority of the patient's cornea. DMEK significantly reduces the risk of rejection and promotes faster visual recovery compared to traditional methods. Our skilled corneal specialists are dedicated to delivering optimal outcomes for patients with endothelial disorders, making DMEK a promising solution for improved vision and long-term eye health.

What is Descemet Membrane Endothelial Keratoplasty?

DMEK is a highly specialised form of partial-thickness corneal transplant surgery.

It involves replacing the damaged Descemet membrane and endothelial cells of the patient's cornea with healthy donor tissue.

This procedure is particularly effective for treating conditions that affect the innermost layer of the cornea, such as Fuchs' dystrophy and bullous keratopathy.

HOW DOES DMEK WORK?

Find out how Descemet Membrane Endothelial Keratoplasty is performed at OCL Vision

During a DMEK procedure, the surgeon begins by creating a small incision in the cornea. Through this opening, the damaged Descemet membrane and endothelial cells are carefully removed. The surgeon then inserts a thin layer of donor tissue, comprising only the Descemet membrane and endothelial cells, through the same incision. This delicate donor tissue is precisely positioned and secured in place using an air bubble. In the days and weeks following the surgery, the new endothelial cells begin to function, gradually clearing the cornea and improving the patient's vision. This minimally invasive approach allows for targeted replacement of only the diseased portion of the cornea, preserving the healthy outer layers and promoting faster recovery.

  • Faster visual recovery: Many patients experience significant improvement in vision within weeks of surgery.
  • Lower risk of rejection: As less foreign tissue is transplanted, the risk of graft rejection is reduced.
  • Minimal impact on corneal structure: The procedure preserves most of the patient's own cornea, maintaining its natural strength.
  • Improved visual outcomes: DMEK often results in better final visual acuity compared to other transplant techniques.
  • Reduced need for steroid eye drops: Patients typically require fewer long-term medications post-surgery.

DMEK FAQ's

View knowledge base

Am I a suitable candidate for DMEK?

DMEK is typically recommended for patients with endothelial disorders such as Fuchs' dystrophy or bullous keratopathy. Our surgeons will assess your specific condition to determine if DMEK is the best option for you.

How long does the DMEK procedure take?

The surgery usually takes about 30-60 minutes and is typically performed under local anaesthesia.

What is the recovery process like after DMEK?

You'll need to lie flat on your back for several hours after surgery to help the graft adhere. Most patients can resume normal activities within a few weeks, but full visual recovery may take several months.

Are scans included in the corneal consultation price?

Scans are not included in the initial consultation fee. The initial consultation is £350, and each scan costs £50. Up to 3 scans may be required, as confirmed by the consultant, bringing the total price to £350 + scans.
