Book a ConsultationAt OCL Vision, we offer advanced corneal transplantation techniques, including the innovative Descemet Stripping Automated Endothelial Keratoplasty (DSAEK).
This procedure focuses on replacing only the damaged inner layers of the cornea while preserving the healthy outer layers, significantly reducing the risk of rejection and offering a promising solution for patients with endothelial disorders such as Fuchs' dystrophy and bullous keratopathy.
What is Descemet Stripping Automated Endothelial Keratoplasty?
DSAEK: Descemet Stripping Automated Endothelial Keratoplasty (DSAEK) is a specialised corneal transplant technique.
DSAEK is a partial-thickness corneal transplant procedure that replaces the damaged endothelial cells and Descemet's membrane with healthy donor tissue.
This advanced technique offers faster visual recovery and fewer complications compared to traditional full-thickness corneal transplants.
How Does DSAEK Work?
Discover DSAEK, a cutting-edge corneal transplant technique for endothelial disorders.
During a DSAEK procedure, the surgeon begins by making a small incision in the cornea. Through this opening, the damaged Descemet's membrane and endothelial cells are carefully removed. A thin layer of donor tissue, consisting of the endothelium, Descemet's membrane, and a small amount of supporting stroma, is then prepared using an automated microkeratome. This donor tissue is gently inserted through the incision and positioned onto the back surface of the patient's cornea. An air bubble is used to hold the graft in place, allowing it to adhere naturally. Over time, the new endothelial cells begin to function, pumping excess fluid out of the cornea and restoring clarity.
Benefits Descemet Stripping Automated Endothelial Keratoplasty
Discover the benefits of DSAEK at OCL Vision
- Faster visual recovery: DSAEK allows for quicker visual rehabilitation compared to full-thickness corneal transplants. Many patients experience significant improvement in vision within weeks of surgery.
- Better visual outcome: DSAEK provides improved visual acuity compared to other corneal transplants. Studies show that 38-100% of patients achieve visual acuity of ≥0.5 within 3 to 6 months after DSAEK.
- Lower risk of rejection: DSAEK has a lower incidence of graft rejection. Rejection rates for DSAEK are reported to be 0-8%, compared to 1-23% for other corneal transplants.
- Minimal refractive change: DSAEK induces less astigmatism and refractive error. There's typically only a small hyperopic shift of about 1.50 diopters after surgery.
- Stronger post-operative eye: Because DSAEK preserves most of the patient's own cornea, the eye remains stronger and more resistant to injury compared to eyes that have undergone full-thickness transplants.

DSAEK FAQ's
View knowledge baseAm I a suitable candidate for DSAEK?
DSAEK is typically recommended for patients with endothelial disorders such as Fuchs' dystrophy or bullous keratopathy. Our surgeons will assess your specific condition to determine if DSAEK is the best option for you.
How long does the DSAEK procedure take?
The surgery usually takes about 45-60 minutes and is typically performed under local anaesthesia.
What is the recovery process like after DSAEK?
Most patients can resume normal activities within 1-2 weeks, although vision may continue to improve for several months. You'll need to use eye drops and avoid rubbing your eye during the initial recovery period.
Who will my surgeon be?
OCL Vision has 6 consultant corneal transplant surgeons who have all been fellowship trained in transplant techniques and have specialised in this field.
Are scans included in the corneal consultation price?
Scans are not included in the initial consultation fee. The initial consultation is £350, and each scan costs £50. Up to 3 scans may be required, as confirmed by the consultant, bringing the total price to £350 + scans.
