Corneal collagen crosslinking is a proven, effective treatment designed to halt the progression of keratoconus, a condition where the cornea becomes thin and bulges forward.

By performing this procedure early, we can prevent many complications associated with keratoconus and help preserve your vision.

What is corneal collagen crosslinking?

Corneal collagen crosslinking is a medical procedure that combines ultraviolet (UV) light with Riboflavin eye drops (vitamin B2) to treat keratoconus.

During the procedure, the cornea is first saturated with Riboflavin drops. Then, UV light is applied to the cornea, initiating a chemical reaction that forms bonds between collagen fibres. This process, known as cross-linking, strengthens the cornea and stabilises its shape, preventing further distortion typical of keratoconus.

Types of corneal collagen crosslinking

We provide advanced Avedro collagen crosslinking.

Book a Consultation

We provide advanced Avedro collagen crosslinking, a high fluence technology that significantly reduces the time required for the procedure compared to traditional methods. While conventional treatments can take up to an hour per eye, Avedro crosslinking completes the process in just a few minutes, providing a more efficient experience for patients.

Standard crosslinking aims to freeze the shape of the cornea and maintain your current vision. Some patients are suitable for topography-guided surface laser to improve the corneal shape. This can reduce the need for contact lenses and improve vision in glasses.

Other options to improve the corneal shape include Keraring surgery, where synthetic ring segments are inserted into the cornea, and Keranatural CAIRS (corneal allogenic intrastromal ring segment) surgery, where corneal collagen segments are used instead

  • Halts keratoconus progression: The procedure effectively stops the progression of keratoconus by strengthening the corneal tissue. This prevents further deterioration in vision and corneal shape.
  • Minimally invasive with quick recovery: corneal collagen crosslinking is a minimally invasive procedure performed under topical anaesthetic drops. It involves no stitches, and most individuals experience a comfortable recovery with minimal downtime.
  • Improved visual outcomes: When combined with topography-guided surface laser, the procedure can enhance visual acuity and reduce the need for contact lenses. Many individuals experience improved vision and greater comfort following treatment.
