What is Keranatural CAIRS?

Keratoconus is an eye condition that causes the cornea to thin and bulge into a cone shape and distorts vision as it progresses.

Corneal Allogenic Intracorneal Ring Segments (CAIRS) developed in 2018 offers a breakthrough solution for keratoconus aimed at improving quality of vision and avoiding the need for corneal transplantation in keratoconic patients who have poor vision with glasses or contact lenses.

Unlike synthetic alternatives such as Intacs, Ferrara rings, or Kerarings, CAIRS uses human corneal tissue that has been processed to meet rigorous safety standards with all human cells removed. This eliminates the risk of tissue rejection. Keranatural produced by the Vision Gift Eyebank in the USA is human tissue. This innovative treatment can reshape the cornea and improve vision, potentially avoiding the need for corneal transplantation.

  • Enhanced vision: Improves vision by reshaping the cornea and reducing irregular astigmatism. This will typically improve glasses corrected vision and can be combined in a stages approach with a ICL lens implant to eliminate or reduce the need for glasses.
  • Reduced dependence on contact lenses: Decreases or eliminates the need for uncomfortable and inconvenient contact lenses. Rigid contact lens wearer may be able to wear soft lenses which are more comfortable.
  • Improved quality of life: Enhances overall quality of life by improving vision and reducing reliance on contact lenses.
  • Avoids corneal transplantation: Provides an effective alternative to corneal transplantation with typically better visual results.
  • Reversible procedure: Allows for bespoke adjustments or removal if necessary.
  • Integration: Keranatural integrates into the cornea unlike synthetic alternatives, which may be extruded by the eye even years later.
