Intravitreal Injections

Intravitreal Injections for Retinal Disorders: Advanced Treatment at OCL Vision

Intravitreal injections and intraretinal injections are both techniques used to deliver medications directly into the eye. Anti-VEGF intravitreal injections prevent damage to the retina as well as potentially improve vision.

Prompt assessment and treatment are crucial for managing retinal disorders effectively.

At OCL Vision, we specialise in personalised intravitreal injections, a key treatment method for conditions such as macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy.

These injections, including anti-VEGF and anti-Ang-2 agents (a common treatment for wet age-related macular degeneration, AMD, that can help slow vision loss) and steroid implants, are administered under local anaesthetic. Our goal is to restore the retina's anatomy, prevent further damage to photoreceptors, and improve vision.

Intravitreal Injections for retinal disorders

At OCL Vision, we provide a comprehensive range of intravitreal injections tailored to your specific condition.

These injections help treat various retinal disorders by stopping leakage, improving central retina swelling, and preventing the growth of abnormal blood vessels.

Conditions treated with intravitreal injections include:

  • Macular Degeneration: Prevents further damage and potentially improves vision.
  • Diabetic Retinopathy: Controls abnormal blood vessel growth and leakage.
  • Retinal Vein Occlusion: Reduces swelling and prevents additional damage.

Assessment and treatment

At your initial assessment, our specialists will thoroughly examine your eyes to determine the most suitable personalised treatment.

In most cases, treatment may be administered on the same day. We will always discuss the options with you, allowing you to make an informed decision.

We offer four different types of eye injections tailored to meet individual patient needs. These anti-VEGF treatments manage various retinal conditions, including wet age-related macular degeneration and diabetic macular oedema. Each medication has unique characteristics, such as duration of effect and targeting mechanisms. For instance, Vabysmo is a newer, dual-action drug that may allow for less frequent injections. Our consultants will determine the most suitable option based on your specific eye condition, treatment goals and individual response to therapy.

The number and frequency of injections depend on your condition and response to treatment. Our clinicians will develop a personalised treatment plan, which will be continuously monitored and adjusted as needed.

They will review your scan results and visual assessment, discuss your goals and expectations, and explain any suitable treatment options. You will have time to ask questions and receive expert advice tailored to your individual case.

4. Undergo Your Procedure

You will then be taken into our state-of-the-art operating theatre for your injections. Our team will ensure you feel at ease throughout, and the procedure itself is typically quick and painless.

Intravitreal injection FAQ's

View knowledge base

What should I expect after an intravitreal injection?

After the injection, you may experience some discomfort once the local anaesthetic wears off. Paracetamol is occasionally required to alleviate discomfort. Lubricating eye drops can also help keep your eyes comfortable. Your eye may be red and photosensitive for the next 48 hours, with symptoms typically subsiding within 2-3 days. Contact our team if redness, pain, or vision loss persists or worsens after two days.

Can I experience floaters after an injection?

Yes. Some people experience floaters immediately after an injection, which usually resolves within a few days.

How often will I need injections?

The frequency and number of injections vary based on your condition and response to treatment. Your surgeon will create a personalised plan and monitor your progress throughout the treatment programme.

Is the treatment painful?

The injections are performed under local anaesthetic to minimise discomfort. Some discomfort may occur once the anaesthetic wears off, but this can be managed with paracetamol and lubricating eye drops.

By choosing OCL Vision, you can trust that you are receiving the highest standard of care, tailored to your unique needs. Our expert team is dedicated to helping you achieve the best possible outcomes for your vision and eye health.

Are scans included in the consultation price?

Scans are not included in the initial consultation fee. Two scans are always required, costing £210 each, which brings the total consultation price to £780 (£360 for the consultation + £420 for the scans).
