He specialises in complex cataract surgery, premium lens implants, medical retina and inflammatory eye disease. He performs cataract surgery, intravitreal injections, steroid implants, and laser treatments.

Mr Shahram Kashani is a Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon and Clinical Lead for diabetic retinopathy screening service at East Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust. He graduated from St George’s Hospital Medical School in 1998. After completing the prestigious membership of the Royal College of Physicians, he started a career in Ophthalmology at the North Thames London Deanery. He has trained at various teaching hospitals in London, including King's College Hospital, Charing Cross Hospital and Western Eye Hospital. He was competitively selected for two advanced fellowship training programmes in medical retina and uveitis at Chelsea and Westminster NHS Trust and the world-renowned Moorfields Eye Hospital. It was at Moorfields where he completed his final years of senior registrar training, providing him with a solid platform to progress to fellowship training in medical retina and inflammatory eye disease. 

During his time at East Sussex NHS Trust, he has held several senior roles, including clinical governance lead, regional representative for the Royal College of Ophthalmology, educational supervisor, and clinical lead for the ophthalmology department. He is currently the lead for the Diabetic Retinopathy Screening program at East Sussex NHS Trust. He has completed a master's (MSc) degree in ‘Leadership and Healthcare’, which has provided him with valuable skills for achieving challenging targets at his NHS Trust.

Mr Kashani was appointed as a Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon in 2011 and has since developed extensive experience in cataract surgery, retinal disease management and intravitreal injection therapy. Alongside his clinical work, he has been instrumental in developing modern retina services and multidisciplinary ophthalmic teams.

His approach focuses on providing personalised care and achieving the best possible visual outcomes for each patient through careful assessment and tailored treatment planning.

Research highlights

He has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals and has had numerous poster presentations at various national and international meetings. He attends international conferences every year to advance his knowledge in the most recent developments in ophthalmology. He is a member of various medical societies, including the European Society of Retinal Specialists, the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons, and the Moorfields Alumni Association. He was also the lead for South East Eye Surgeons, where he led a consortium of ophthalmologists in South Sussex.

 

He loves to teach and has been instrumental in local training and development of nurse and orthoptist injectors and optometrists assessors in extended roles currently trending in many NHS hospitals. Over the last few years, he has led the training of many orthoptists, optometrists, and nurse injectors at East Sussex NHS Trust.

Expertise in retinal and cataract care

Mr Kashani is recognised for his leadership within ophthalmology and currently serves as Clinical Lead for diabetic retinopathy screening service at East Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust.

He has played a key role in modernising ophthalmic services and developing innovative models of care, including the introduction of multidisciplinary teams delivering treatments for macular degeneration and other retinal conditions.

In addition to his clinical responsibilities, he is actively involved in education and training. He contributes to the development of ophthalmology training programmes and supports the education of junior doctors and ophthalmology trainees.

Mr Kashani is a member of several professional organisations including the Royal College of Ophthalmologists, the Royal College of Physicians, and leading European ophthalmology societies.
