About Masara Laginaf

Ms Laginaf is the first OCL Vision trained fellow of refractive surgery to join the elite group of OCL Vision consultants. She has a well-deserved reputation for upholding the highest standards of care and delivering personalised and precise visual outcomes for her patients.

Masara Laginaf MBBS BSc (Hons) FRCOphth Cert LRS is a consultant ophthalmologist specialising in cornea, cataract and refractive surgery. Her areas of interest include laser eye surgery, lens based vision correction surgery, cataract surgery with premium intraocular lenses and corneal transplant surgery.

Ms Laginaf graduated with Distinction from the world-leading University College London Medical School. She achieved advanced undergraduate ophthalmology training at Moorfields Eye Hospital and was awarded the Certificate of Merit in Ophthalmology. She completed her medical elective in cornea and refractive surgery alongside the renowned Professor Jonathan Moore in Northern Ireland.

Ms Laginaf undertook postgraduate medical and surgical training at the Royal Free Hospital, London before commencing specialised ophthalmic surgical training in the Kent, Surrey and Sussex Rotation. She subsequently completed two and a half years of advanced subspecialist fellowship training including

  • Cornea, external eye disease and femtosecond laser cataract surgery at Frimley Health NHS Foundation Trust
  • Cornea, cataract and refractive surgery at Luton and Dunstable University Hospital and OCL Vision alongside Allon Barsam

Ms Laginaf is one of a handful of surgeons in the UK who has been fellowship trained in femtosecond laser cataract surgery and refractive laser eye surgery. She is the first OCL Vision trained fellow of refractive surgery, having honed her skills training under world-leading refractive surgeons with access to the most advanced laser technology.

Ms Laginaf is currently appointed as a locum consultant ophthalmic surgeon at Luton and Dunstable University Hospital, UCL Partners, specialising in cornea, oculoplastics and cataract surgery. She co-leads the tertiary corneal service and is responsible for fellowship training of corneal transplant surgery. In her role, she has established the import of US corneal tissue to battle national shortages and the use of innovative Omnigen amniotic membrane technology for corneal healing.

Ms Laginaf is a Fellow of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (FRCOphth) and has attained The Certificate of Laser Refractive Surgery (Cert LRS) qualifying her to practice independent laser refractive surgery in the UK. She is on the GMC specialist register for ophthalmology and is recognised by major insurers.

Academia and Education

Ms Laginaf’s current research interests include laser and lens solutions for presbyopia.

  • Her work has been published in multiple peer-reviewed journals. She is an invited speaker both nationally and internationally and regularly presents research at international meetings.
  • Ms Laginaf has co-authored a chapter on refractive surgery in the leading ophthalmology textbook, Training in Ophthalmology (3rd Edition, Oxford University Press).
  • She designed the first national refractive surgery e-learning course for trainee ophthalmologists in association with the Royal College of Ophthalmologists.
  • Ms Laginaf has been appointed to the Royal College of Ophthalmologists’ prestigious Surgical Skills Faculty, and is actively engaged in training eye surgeons in advanced surgical techniques.

Industry Leader

Ms Laginaf is actively engaged with industry to harness the best of pharmaceuticals, surgical devices and technology available to her patients. She is a key opinion leader for Rayner, the original intraocular lens company, with the ability to adopt the latest lens technology rapidly. She has a close network of international ophthalmologists and technology users with whom to share knowledge about latest innovations and techniques in the field.
